Essential Tips for Solo Travelers

Start Somewhere Kind

Your first solo trip shouldn't be your hardest, and the destination you choose makes an enormous difference. Pick somewhere known for being safe and welcoming to solo travelers — a place with good public transport, widely spoken English, and a well-trodden traveler trail. Confidence builds remarkably fast once you've navigated one gentle city entirely on your own.

Booking your first night's accommodation in advance also removes a lot of arrival-day stress. Landing in a new country is disorienting enough without hunting for a bed; give yourself the gift of a confirmed room, and improvise from there once you've found your feet.

Solo travel teaches you that you're far better company — and far braver — than you ever gave yourself credit for.

Stay Connected, Stay Sharp

A few habits separate smooth solo trips from stressful ones. Keep these in mind wherever you go:

  • Stay connected — a local SIM or eSIM keeps maps, translation and loved ones within easy reach.

  • Share your plans — send a rough itinerary to someone back home, and check in periodically.

  • Trust your instincts — if a situation feels off, remove yourself. Your gut is your best travel companion.

  • Carry a backup — keep some emergency cash and a copy of your documents separate from the originals.

None of this is about fear — it's about freeing yourself to relax and enjoy the trip, knowing you've covered the basics.

Solo Doesn't Mean Lonely

The most surprising thing about solo travel is how rarely you actually feel alone. Group tours, hostels, cooking classes and walking tours are the easiest ways to meet people when you want company, and fellow solo travelers are often just as eager to connect.

And when you don't want company? Embrace it fully. Eating alone at the bar, changing your plans on a whim, following a curiosity down an unfamiliar street — that freedom is the whole point. Solo travel teaches you that you're far better company, and far braver, than you ever gave yourself credit for.
