Start With the Classics

The loop around Tre Cime di Lavaredo is the Dolomites distilled into a single day — three iconic limestone peaks, sweeping alpine panoramas, and a well-marked trail that most reasonably fit walkers can manage. It's dramatic enough to take your breath away, yet gentle enough to serve as the perfect introduction to the range.

Start early from the Rifugio Auronzo trailhead to beat both the crowds and the afternoon weather. As you round the peaks, the views shift constantly — jagged summits, wildflower meadows, distant snowfields — and a stop at one of the mountain huts along the way rewards you with hearty food and possibly the finest lunch view of your life.

In the Dolomites, every switchback earns you a view worth stopping for. The mountains reward patience.

Sleep in the Mountains

A little preparation goes a long way in the mountains. Before you set out, make sure you've sorted these essentials:

  • Layers and a rain shell — weather turns fast at altitude, so pack for four seasons even in summer.

  • Proper footwear — broken-in hiking boots with ankle support are non-negotiable on rocky trails.

  • A rifugio booking — mountain huts fill fast in season; reserve ahead if you plan to stay overnight.

  • Plenty of water and snacks — refill points are limited, and the climbs burn through energy quickly.

Go in shoulder season — late June or September — for thinner crowds, golden light, and trails at their most peaceful.

Come Prepared

For those who want more than a day hike, the Dolomites open up into some of Europe's finest multi-day trekking. Hut-to-hut routes let you travel light, sleeping in rifugios and waking above the clouds to hike before the day-trippers arrive. The famous Alta Via trails string together the range's most spectacular scenery over several days.

Whatever distance you choose, pace yourself and take the altitude seriously — the climbs are steep and the air is thin. But that's part of the reward: in the Dolomites, every switchback earns you a view worth stopping for, and every summit feels genuinely earned.
